8 bits for a Byte - Your AI Weekend Curated Reads: 7-27-24

Navigating the AI Landscape and Overcoming Adoption Challenges

Recently, I experienced a personal crisis when my dog went missing for 24 hours. Thankfully, we found her, but the incident highlighted how easily we can become distracted by life's unexpected events.

Maintaining focus in today's world is challenging. As I write this newsletter, I'm constantly tempted by the dopamine hits from emails, texts, Slack messages, random thoughts, and my to-do list. It's one thing to stay ruthlessly focused, but it's another to craft a voice that resonates with you about my 25+ year corporate journey.

With each post, newsletter, email, and Slack message I writeā€”and with your invaluable feedbackā€”I feel I'm getting closer to providing the content you need to advance your AI career.

Transforming an organization - hard, Implementing AI in the organization - Harder. Doing both IMPOSSIBLE. Until now! AI Quick Bytes will help you navigate through it all. LETā€™s F-ing Go!

Step 1 - Take Action In Your Career!

Dream of being a Strategic AI Leader? Will outline the roadmap for your success. Join us for our upcoming FREE virtual workshop, ā€œEssential Knowledge For AI Leaders - Creating a Roadmap For AI Success,ā€ on August 13th from 11 AM to 12 PM PST.

Letā€™s Get To It!

Welcome, To 8 bits for a Byte!

Here's what caught my eye in the world of AI this week:

  1. Three Archetypes of AI Application Startups

In the ever-evolving world of AI, it's easy to get lost in the jargon. Let's break down the main types of AI startups you're likely to encounter in the wild:

AI Copilots: Your Digital Sidekick

These are the AI tools that work alongside you, enhancing your productivity without trying to steal your job. Think of them as the helpful colleague who's always ready to lend a hand, minus the small talk by the water cooler.

AI Colleagues: The Silent Workhorses

Imagine delegating tasks to a team member who works 24/7 without complaining. That's your AI colleague. They handle tasks autonomously, leaving you free to focus on the big picture. Just don't expect them to join you for after-work drinks.

AI Native Services: The Full Package

These startups offer end-to-end solutions, blending AI and human expertise seamlessly. It's like outsourcing to a company that has both cutting-edge technology and good old-fashioned human intuition.

Bolt-On AI: The Upgrade Package (My Take)

This is where things get interesting. Bolt-On AI is about teaching old dogs new tricks - integrating AI into existing applications. When done well, like our friends at Tability, it can transform a good product into a great one. When done poorly, it's a bit like putting racing stripes on a minivan - looks cool, but doesn't add much horsepower.

The key to success in the AI startup world isn't just about having the fanciest algorithms. It's about understanding where AI can truly add value and implementing it in a way that feels natural and helpful rather than forced or gimmicky.

As we navigate this AI-powered landscape, remember: the goal isn't to replace humans, but to augment our capabilities. Whether you're copiloting, collaborating with AI colleagues, using native services, or bolting on AI to existing systems, the future is about finding the right balance between human insight and artificial intelligence.

So, as you consider your next move in the AI space, ask yourself: Which of these approaches aligns best with your organizations needs? And more importantly, how can you implement AI in a way that genuinely enhances your business rather than just jumping on the bandwagon?

  1. Transformation is challenging work - donā€™t let the noise drown out your voice. The path forward will be challenging, no doubt. However, if you attune yourself to the cultural rhythms of your organization, you'll be able to guide its AI transformation effectively. Remember, small steps in the right direction can lead to significant shifts over time. Stay focused, stay adaptable, and you'll make a meaningful impact on your organization's AI journey.

Venture Beat

Venturebeat did an excellent job covering all the changes that took place this week in AI. Carl Franzen, Executive Editor, VentureBeat shares and I agree completely.

ā

ā€œGen AI may not remake the world in the way that some of its most vocal proponents and even detractors imagine, but I think it will have a much larger impact on our lives than what we've seen so farā€

Carl Franzen

The ML, Data and AI Landscape can be ā€œMaddeningā€ in its complexity but Firstmark does an excellent job at breaking down all the players.

This paper presents an extensive empirical evaluation of Llama 3. Say what you want about the Zuck, I give him mad props for putting his money where his mouth is. Open Sourcing Llama may be the thing that long after he is gone he is most remembered for. The democratization of AI IMHO it is that important. Thank you Zuck!

Paper Conclusion:

ā

ā€œIn many ways, the development of high-quality foundation models is still in its infancy. Our experience in developing Llama 3 suggests that substantial further improvements of these models are on the horizon. Throughout the development of the Llama 3 model family, we found that a strong focus on high-quality data, scale, and simplicity consistently yielded the best results. In preliminary experiments, we explored more complex model architectures and training recipes but did not find the benefits of such approaches to outweigh the additional complexity they introduce in model development.ā€

A recent research paper, ā€˜AI Tool Use and Adoption in Software Development by Individuals and Organizations,ā€˜ sheds light on the challenges hindering AI tool adoption. Abi breaks it down:

Challenges that hinder AI tool adoption

The researchers identified four challenges at the individual level and three at the organizational level that impact the level of AI tool usage within companies.

Individual challenges include:

  1. Fear of decreased skills

  2. Limited capabilities relative to expectations

  3. Lack of prompting skill

  4. Potential judgment from peers

Challenges at the organizational level include:

  1. Lacking a culture of sharing

  2. Company does not cover the cost of the tool

  3. Lack of company guidelines

The study highlights a crucial link between a 'culture of sharing' and 'potential judgment from peers.' In collaborative environments, knowledge about AI tools and their benefits spreads faster, leading to more effective adoption.

This reinforces what I've been saying all along: AI adoption isn't just a tech challengeā€”it's a cultural one.

Transforming an organization: HARD

Implementing Al in the organization: HARDER

Doing both: Seemingly IMPOSSIBLE

But here's the good news: It's not impossible anymore. The AI Quick Bytes newsletter and our free workshop are here to guide you through this complex journey. (Yes, that's a shameless 2nd plug, but hey, we're here to help!)

Ready to tackle the AI transformation challenge? Let's make the impossible possible together.
