Managing an AI pipeline is complex. Whether you are a Product, Program, or C-Suite leader, it's essential to understand what is required for your organization to scale with AI.

New and specialized areas of generative AI operations (GenAIOps) and large language model operations (LLMOps) have emerged, building on MLOps to address the challenges of developing and managing generative AI and LLM-powered apps in production.

  • MLOps: Covers core tools, processes, and best practices for end-to-end machine learning system development and operations.

  • GenAIOps: Extends MLOps to develop and operationalize generative AI solutions, focusing on foundation model management.

  • LLMOps: A subset of GenAIOps, focused on developing and productionizing LLM-based solutions.

  • RAGOps: A subclass of LLMOps, focusing on the delivery and operation of RAGs, considered the ultimate reference architecture for generative AI and LLMs.

I understand the Ops framework described above is definitely the ideal and will take companies, particularly larger ones, 3-5 years or more to implement. Just as CI/CD evolved, so will LLMOps. At this point, companies not practicing CI/CD are likely out of business. The same will happen with LLMOps, but at a faster pace, in my opinion.

It's great to be a startup with a new tech stack, no legacy systems, and the ability to make decisions in hours or days instead of weeks or months. Startups are primed to disrupt bigger companies that can't automate quickly. In many ways, this is less about tech and more about an organization's ability to iterate and implement quickly.

đź“ŠTrends

The cost of scaling models requires massive economic resources, a domain currently dominated by large players. Over time, advancements in processing and cost-efficient CPU techniques may level the playing field, though the timeline is uncertain. Smaller startups and consulting companies can find opportunities in fine-tuning and RAG without needing significant capital.

Check out my post on RAG Vs Finetuning in last weeks 8 bits for a Byte! As with everything AI everything can change at moments notice with the next game changing AI product release.

Is Prompt Engineering Dead? Not really, but the role is evolving. While the demand for prompt engineers remains strong, the future will see more automation and changes in this role. My prediction is that as AI processes mature and become more automated the Prompt Engineering role will get reduced, but there will always be a need for a role of someone to ensure model quality. Like most 21st century knowledge workers Prompt Engineers will consistently have to adapt to keep up with the pace of change but their foundational skills of ensuring quality review will always be required. Prompt Engineering is the Business Analyst of the 20th century.
